Chapter 6: An Uncomfortable Silence

"The young girl tried the shoe on, and it was a perfect fit. Prince Charming's eyes grew wide, and he gave the young girl a hug. He took the scarf off of her head and found she was the beautiful blonde haired princess he was looking for. They were married at the palace not long after and they lived happily ever after."

"Daddy, will I find my Cinderella someday? I want to be somebody's Prince Charming."

My dad smiled at me and closed the book, tousling my hair.

"I'm sure you will, buddy. Just be a nice guy, and the girls will love you. Now, go to sleep all right?"

"Okay. Umm, Daddy, the storms outside are scary. They can't come through the house and hurt me, can they?"

"No, just stay in the house, and you will be safe. It's like thunderstorms, but without the rain, okay?"

"Good night Daddy."

I put my head down, and my dad gave me a goodnight kiss before he turned the overhead light off and shut the door. My night light turned on and I started thinking about the past few days. I still didn't understand why the sky had turned black and why there was lightning all the time that hardly stopped. Daddy said it was a different kind of weather caused by some bad things that got released into the air. I was happy that I didn't have to go to school anymore, but I wished the sky would be blue again. Eventually I fell asleep. I was dreaming about running, and the dream was so real I felt like I could hear the footsteps pounding in my ear. Suddenly I heard loud noises I didn't recognize, which forced me awake. I was scared, and I crawled under my bed to hide. I closed my eyes when I heard footsteps and the sound of my door opening.

"Hey, it's Daddy, come here. There are some things that are happening, okay, but I need you to be brave for me until I come back."

My dad helped me out from under the bed and I hid in the closet. I heard him shut my bedroom door again, and I cowered in fear under some clothes. A long time passed, and I heard more noises, struggling and then a crash, followed by a loud bang. Suddenly my bedroom door opened and I held my breath even though I just wanted to cry.

"What the fuck's in this room? Oh nothing, it's just kid crap, nothing of value. Let's go. We're done here."

The footsteps got further away again and suddenly the house fell into an uncomfortable silence.

  1. Oh noooo not the Dad T_T I hope he's okay.. Stupid soldiers! Why were they looking for stuff of value? Again, they're not being as helpful as they should be in this time of crisis. >:[
    Looking forward to more :D

    1. Yeah >:[ Since I wrote this from the son's perspective, what happened is the soldier wanted the dad to hand over his gun. The dad didn't want to give up that right because he knows they didn't have the authority to do that, so they fought instead. This chapter was a big hint that the soldiers are getting orders from someone who is not even remotely interested in having people recover from the crisis.
Thanks for reading and commenting! I'm glad you're enjoying it.

  2. The Dad!!! I feel soo sorry for the kid, that is so sad! I hope he stays calm and hides properly. This is so dumb. It sounds like the soldiers are robbing him. Shouldn't they be the helpers? *Sighs* The soldiers are so dumb right now. I just feel like punching them in the face. I hope the child stays safe and doesn't get carried away by the soldiers!

    1. LOL yeah it does sound like they're robbing this house, doesn't it? They wanted the dad's gun, which was valuable to them so they could keep the citizens under control. This chapter was a big hint that the soldiers are getting their orders from someone who doesn't give a crap about the citizens.

  3. I like the way you are introducing all those characters, Lateknight. Now I am slowly getting antsy to see how you will bring it all together *g*

    1. Hi anna! Thanks I'm glad you are enjoying this style I am trying out. The next couple chapters, some of the characters should start interacting with each other. =)

Thank you for reading and commenting!

  4. Wow, this was intense! I loved how you built up tension here, from the sweet bedtime tale -the kid's a cutie, btw, wanting to be a Prince Charming <3-, to the sky turning black, up until the moment when the poor boy has to see his dad been dragged away :-(.

The last pic just broke my heart :'-(.

    1. Hi! Thank you. =D This chapter went from nice and peaceful to terrible and unpleasant pretty fast, huh? We'll see the kid again in the next chapter.

      Thanks for reading and commenting!

  5. What a sad hang on to the edge of your seat chapter. That poor kid. I hope his dad is ok! I hope they don't find him hiding in his closet. Those soldiers.....damn. They are just as bad as the people out there causing chaos in the streets and looting.

    1. These soldiers particularly were taking advantage of the crisis to lord power over the poor citizens. Don't worry though, they don't care about the kid for now, so they've left the house.

Thanks for reading and commenting! =)

  6. Oh dear that poor boy what will he do if his dad is taken away? I feel so helpless for that little one. I hope if he is alone he will be able to cope for now. Great story. I am loving it.

    1. Thanks! :D
This little boy is not going to be in a very good situation if he ends up alone because he's a little boy, and there's not much he can do. One thing is for sure, he will probably lose his innocence much faster than necessary. :(

  7. The way you're introducing these characters is brilliant! Kudos to you! However, I am a ball of nerves reading what's going to happen next. =D

    1. Aww thanks so much. I wanted to show the four of them, all on the same night, going through similar, yet very different things, and how the chemical attack has affected all of them in very different ways. I'm glad that you're on the edge of your seat wanting to know what's going to happen. :)

  8. A child?! Dude! That's not right. Are all these people going to meet up with each other, cuz someone needs to come save this kid. Now I'm actually sad...

    1. Aww T_T.
I wanted to play with a child because I don't really do that much in my other stories, and I thought it might be fun to have a child as a main character. His situation of course, is not ideal, but the apocalypse spares no one, and apocalypses are supposed to suck. Yes, it is my plan to have the four characters' lives merge somehow, or at least have some of them meet each other.

  10. Poor kid, I'm interested to see how his story will mix with the others. Children see things differently so should be interesting... If he's not too traumatised that is!

    1. Haha, yeah, his perspective will be fun to write from because he's a child. :D He's having a bad night. :(

  11. It gets worse! The government seem to be bigger crooks than the regular kind. I hope the dad is alive, but I'm guessing that he isn't. How is such a sweet little boy going to survive on his own in a society that is being overrun by a corrupt government?

    1. This government is corrupt at its very core, using scare tactics and propaganda to control the majority of society. Some of the people, like this kid's dad, won't stand for that, so they try to fight back. Your answer to how the little boy survives will be answered in later chapters.

  12. The little boy is so cute and his father is very handsome :) it's a shame they have to deal with that. I really don't think the military is being honest it's like they're just terrorizing the town and coming up with excuses for it. I really don't want the boy to get captured I hope he stays in the closet and doesn't make a sound.

    1. Aww haha, thanks, I really like making male Sims. XD
You are right, the military is terrorizing the town pretty badly. The father was a police officer too, so this soldier was sent to get his gun. Whoever is telling the military what to do is not a good person.
Heehee, the boy, you'll find out what happens to him in the next chapter.

Anyway. yeah, he's completely unsure what just happened, and he heard a bunch of really scary noises. T_T
Thanks for commenting, sorry that I didn't see it till now.

  14. So the military is looking for things of value, eh? Poor kid! I hope his dad's alright!

    1. This kid's dad is a police officer, but he wasn't as compliant as the first guy in chapters 1 & 2. The soldiers were supposed to find the police officer's gun, since they're confiscating all weapons from law enforcement, so that's what he meant by things of value, and he didn't think he would find the gun in a child's room. You'll find out what happened to the dad in the next chapter.
